"The Road to Cincinnati" is the eighth episode of broadcast season 32 of The Simpsons and the six-hundred and ninety-second episode overall. It originally aired on November 29, 2020. The episode was written by Jeff Westbrook and directed by Matthew Nastuk. It guest stars Jason Bateman as Max Davis and himself and Hannibal Buress as Principal Finch.
Synopsis[edit]
- Principal Skinner goes with Superintendent Chalmers on an 800-mile car ride to Cincinnati to attend an administrators convention. But when Skinner admits that he made Chalmers' first choice for the trip, Principal Finch, get ill, an argument breaks out between the two educators.
Plot[edit]
At the school, a staff reunion is held by Superintendent Chalmers, who talks about Principal Duggins' situation at the school and the national administrators convention, Edu-Con, in Cincinnati, and decides to take Principal Finch as his plus-one instead of Principal Skinner.
During detention, Bart urges Skinner to step up his game to win the spot, and when Finch calls Chalmers to inform him that he's sick, Skinner takes his chance, and Chalmers reluctantly agrees. However, on board, Chalmers has panic attacks due to his fear of flying, and they get kicked out upon landing back at Springfield International Airport.
Their only other choice is to travel together in Agnes' Buick for 800 miles. Bored by Skinner's discussions on chili, Chalmers picks up some hitchhikers who start improvising Shakespeare, annoying him further, to the point of almost colliding with a truck and hitting a silo, destroying the car with their wallets and luggage inside.
At the Conklin County Courthouse, Judge J.T. Winchester is in a bad mood because her son did her manicure badly, so Skinner fixes it for her, and she gives them a new car to ride in—her Cutlass.
Halfway through the journey, they stop at The Greasy Chain, a cyclist bar, and ask for beers, but the bartender points out they don't serve them. Chalmers starts a chain of events where the cyclists begin following them on the road, enraged by the name-calling and his breaking of their bike computers.
When the bikers cause their car to spin and hit a pole, Skinner abandons the car, leaving Chalmers alone, but he returns with U.S. Armed Forces veterans in wheelchairs, armed with big biceps. The cyclists leave in the support van, followed by the veterans.
At night, they rest at the Tuckernuck Inn, and the next morning, Skinner overhears a conversation between Chalmers and Finch, in which Chalmers agrees to fire him so Finch can join the school.
In the fight that follows, Skinner reveals he is the one who puts black mold in Finch's poké, while Chalmers reveals how he never liked him. Skinner leaves, while Chalmers hitchhikes on a spaghetti truck, arriving at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati. However, they discover they switched jackets and Skinner has Chalmers' speech cards.
Chalmers gets called on stage and begins telling the story of their trip, but soon realizes how much Skinner means to him. Skinner arrives just in time to deliver the cards, and they hug. Chalmers delivers his speech, and back at school, Skinner delivers the news to Bart, having earned the respect of the kids on the playground.
At the Simpsons House, the family reunites as Marge announces they're going to watch improv Shakespeare, where they watch the improv group from earlier perform, while Skinner and Chalmers are seen dining together at the Skyline Chili.
